Santa Rosa Zine Fest Returns March 22-26
This second-annual celebration of the DIY art form returns with online and in-person programs
The Santa Rosa Zine Fest (#SRZF22) returns March 22-26. The second annual SRZF, presented by the Sonoma County Library and Santa Rosa Zine Collective (SRZC), will be a weeklong exploration of DIY publications, with online virtual panels and workshops in English and Spanish from March 22-25 and concluding with an in-person outdoor event at the Northwest Regional Library on Saturday, March 26.
“This year’s Zine Fest not only showcases dozens of local artists but also many different techniques for zine-making,” said Melissa Andrade of SRZC. “The creators in this year’s lineup inspire us with their talents and their activism. We hope everyone attending comes away from the fest as exhilarated as we are–and eager to create zines of their own.”
Short for magazine or fanzine, a zine is a self-made, self-published work that can be created by anyone on any topic, from literature and art, to music and social justice. They can be made from a single folded sheet of paper or be longer and much more elaborate, involving letterpress, risograph and other printing techniques. A limited number of free DIY zine kits will be available at the in-person event, first come first served. The kits include fine-tipped markers, paper, templates, buttons, and sample zines.
Kicking off Zine Fest will be a panel on Tuesday, March 22, about finding liberation through art. The conversation will feature Rima Makaryan of Sonoma Monarch Project, Casper Cendre from ABO Comix and Deseree Fontenot, who serves on the board of Shelterwood Collective. Wednesday will feature two online workshops on Binding, Printing and Connecting: a Xicana Indigenous perspective with artist Amanda Ayala followed by a letterpress history and interactive demonstration from Andrew Mecum of North Bay Letterpress Arts. High schoolers from Quest Forward Academy (QFA) Zine Club will be featured on Thursday. On Friday, Mexican artist Luis Blackaller will present a Spanish-language workshop on photography and risograph, followed by an online Zine Social.
The week of events will culminate in an all-ages, in-person, outdoor festival on March 26 from 1 to 5 p.m. at the Northwest Santa Rosa Library. This in-person event will feature a hands-on zine-making workshop with Taira Creager, tabling by local artists and organizations and the Sonoma County Library’s brand new BiblioBus.
