SRHS Students Awarded $1250 in Scholarships From Local Company – Floortex Design
2023 saw an exciting new chapter for the interiors and flooring boutique Floortex Design. Founder and principal owner, Rudy Hassid, awarded Santa Rosa High School (SRHS) students Georgette Cheriff and Brigitte Blodgett $1,250 in scholarships to use for an art program or college of their choice.
"This is the first time we've done this kind of scholarship." Rudy stated at the ceremony, "The goal is to encourage the students to follow their dreams. Art can certainly take you places.”
Earlier this year, students at Santa Rosa High School were asked to submit an original art piece that expressed one of two themes, Textures of Home or Inspiration Underfoot. Georgette (age 15) and Brigitte (17) each created dioramas expressing their view of "Textures of Home".
Georgette, a sophomore at SR High, won first place and $1,000. She plans to attend a four-year art college and will use the scholarship toward that goal.
Brigitte, the surprise runner-up, received $250 for her work titled, State of Mind. Her goals are more immediate. “I will be attending CSSSA this summer,” she says, “and this scholarship will help a lot with the funding.” The California State Summer School for the Arts is a rigorous, preprofessional, month-long training program in the visual and performing arts, creative writing, animation, and film for talented artists of high school age.
Floortex Design’s store manager in Santa Rosa, Emily Balter, who was a former student at Santa Rosa High School, set this new initiative in motion by connecting with the school's Art Quest program. “I am very proud that our company has decided to honor these kids. I encourage them both to keep being creative in their lives and futures."
Students enrolled at Santa Rosa High School or in the Santa Rosa Art Quest Program are encouraged to apply next year for the 2024 Scholarship.
Both artists’ work will be displayed in the Floortex Design showroom in Santa Rosa until mid-May 2023. You are encouraged to stop by to see their art work!
