Celebrating unity and togetherness: Unum sculpture in Downtown Santa Rosa
At the end of January the community gathered Downtown for the Unum sculpture dedication ceremony held by the City of Santa Rosa Public Art Program. The celebratory event included speeches from Santa Rosa’s Mayor, Natalie Rogers, the City of Santa Rosa Arts & Culture Manager, Tara Thompson, and the Unum sculpture artist, Blessing Hancock.
The art installation symbolizes unity and features sweeping stainless steel curves with water jet cut words in 34 different languages, the 32 most commonly spoken in Sonoma County and two spoken by the Southern Pomo and Coast Miwok communities. When the sun sets, the words illuminate, casting sprawling shadows onto Courthouse Square.
