Mike Hauser Academy 2015 Program Report
The Chamber has released a program report for the Mike Hauser Academy for Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM). The findings are based on pre and post Academy surveys completed by 100 students from the 2015 class.
The surveys were designed to gain a greater understanding of students’ perceptions and attitudes toward math and science in education, confidence with science and math, and interest in pursuing STEM majors and careers. Two of the most significant results were increased interest in STEM careers and STEM undergraduate majors:
- When asked if the Mike Hauser Academy increased interest in a STEM career, 90% of students said yes.
- When asked if the Mike Hauser Academy increased interest in a STEM undergraduate major, 70% of students said yes.
The Mike Hauser Academy gives English Language Learner students the opportunity to visit various STEM related companies where they interact with engineers and professionals, observe demonstrations, and participate in hands-on activities that reinforce classroom math and science lessons. This program helps students grasp mathematical concepts by offering them a direct learning experience and practical application for STEM concepts.
