Mike Hauser Academy Doubles Santa Rosa Student Enrollment
It was a packed house at Piner High School’s Performing Arts Center on April 27 when the Metro Chamber and Santa Rosa City Schools held an orientation for this year's Mike Hauser Academy participants. Santa Rosa student enrollment for the Academy has more than doubled with 130 eighth-graders registered, while total enrollment is on track to include 175 students from Santa Rosa, Sebastopol, Cotati-Rohnert Park, and Healdsburg.
During the orientation, students and parents heard from Fred Van Milligen, Vice President of Research and Development at Viavi Solutions, about the Academy experience. They learned about some of the businesses they would visit and projects they would complete, and the students got to meet their Academy teachers.
The 2017 Mike Hauser Academy will run for three weeks in June with student classes rotating between local long-term participating employers such as Keysight Technologies, Viavi Solutions and Medtronic and many new participants such as Kaiser Permanente and American AgCredit. At each facility, students will get a tour of the facility, create a hands-on project, complete an instructor-led STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) lesson, and participate in an informational interview with an engineer or professional staff member.
